Think twice before deleting that next email. It could just be the key that opens the door to a life-changing adventure.

That proved to be the case for Perky Smith-Hagadone, principal at Northside Elementary School. About three years ago, a note popped up in her inbox that would have been easy to ignore, even easier to click off into the world of cast-off messages.

“It was a little, obscure email that said, ‘Earn your masters, travel the world and learn about conservation,’” said the educator, who not only read the note, but also signed up for the graduate degree program through Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. “It has been a life-changing program.”

Kathrene Mayne, science teacher at Horace Mann PreK-8 School, will be heading to the Central American country of Belize at the end of this month, returning just two days before school starts. But, Mayne won’t be vacationing; instead, she’ll be busy studying marine biology, scientific examination and conservation through Global Field Study, a Miami University on-site master’s program.

Once the final test is handed in and the last bell has rung, a pair of Othello teachers will finish packing their bags and head to the Southeast Asia island of Borneo for a study abroad trip. Miciah and Anthony Marzano will be studying primate conservation strategies and the impact the palm oil industry on the island has on species like the orangutan as part of their master's degree program from Miami University of Ohio.
