Grant Opportunities

The NEA Foundation

The NEA Foundation supports a variety of efforts by teachers, education support professionals, and higher education faculty and staff to improve student learning in the nation's public schools, colleges, and universities.

Learning & Leadership Grants

Learning & Leadership Grants are available for individual teachers to fund participation in high-quality professional development experiences, such as summer institutes or action research. Grant funds may be used for fees, travel expenses, books, or other materials that enable applicants to learn subject matter, instructional approaches, and skills. For more information please visit the Web site.

Fund for Teachers

Fund for Teachers enriches the personal and professional growth of teachers by supporting them as they identify and pursue opportunities around the globe. The Fund provides fellowship grants directly to teachers, with more than three years of experience, to support their professional learning during the summer. Their experiences come in many forms, but share the purpose of better teaching.  For more information please visit the Web site. (Note: Grant awards restricted to certain states)

Teacher As A Researcher Grant

The International Reading Association’s Teacher as Researcher Grant is one of three grant programs for teachers who conduct research inquiries in their classrooms.  The Teacher as Researcher Grant supports teachers in their inquiries about literacy and instruction.  Teacher as Researcher Grant studies may be carried out using any research method or approach so long as the focus is on reading/writing or literacy.  For more information please visit the Web site.

Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research Program

The Sigma Xi Grants-in-Aid of Research (GIAR) program has been providing undergraduate and graduate students with valuable educational experiences for more than 80 years. By encouraging close working relationships between students and faculty, the program promotes scientific excellence and achievement through hands-on learning.  The program awards grants of up to $1,000 to students from all areas of the sciences and engineering.  Applications deadlines are March 15 and October 15 annually.

Student Loan Deferment

Many lenders, including Stafford Loans, have provisions that allow a borrower to temporarily stop making payments if you are enrolled in school 6 or more hours in a semester. These deferments are usually for a period of 6 months; but may be shorter or longer depending on the loan and the lender. Interest on your loan may not be charged during your deferment period.

Visit the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS) For Students and check your current status.

Or, call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-4-FED-AID (1-800-433-3243). If you are hearing-impaired and have questions, please contact the TTY line at 1-800-730-8913.

Scholarship Opportunities

Audubon Miami Valley (AMV) - Rosie Bloom Scholarship

The AMV is offering scholarships to local educators from Butler County, Ohio, interested in furthering conservation and environmental education via a life-changing opportunity with Earth Expeditions. The scholarships will reimburse recipients a portion of their expenses for an international Earth Expeditions field experience. Recipients of the scholarship will receive the award in the Fall semester. Applicants who live or work in Butler County, Ohio, are automatically reviewed for this award and no further action is necessary.

Professional Development Funds

Applicants to Earth Expeditions courses should check with their school district or employer to see if professional development funds are available to further offset costs. If you are a teacher, you may want to check with your school’s Parent-Teacher Association/Organization (PTA/PTO) about financial support. PTAs have aided in fulfilling requests from teachers by asking parents to donate items (e.g. journals, flashlights, etc.) for Earth Expeditions trips.
